As it turned out, SoCo was already on the way to the scene by the time Olivia called the office, and with no surprise, Collins was still working. He’d got wind of the incident from PC Shaw and assured her they would be arriving shortly.

She warned her boss that they’d discovered a body, and that she was almost certain it was Nicole Taint. After a sombre pause, he assured her that after a formal identification, he’d arrange for the next of kin to be notified.

The ambulance technician appeared by her side with his hands in his pocket.

“Your friend’s going to be okay,” he assured her. “He got lucky. Unlike this poor woman.”

In the night, with the sound of the waves lapping close by, they looked at her. Sand covering her lifeless body.

He crouched down and examined her. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know she was long gone, but he stayed with the body until the SoCos arrived. Briefing them along with Olivia and her eyes scanned the crowd of Police officers looking for Andrew.

“He got called away,” a voice said coming up behind her. She turned to see PC Beth Reece looking effortlessly fresh face and beautiful despite her bulky uniform. “They diverted him to something else.”

Liv nodded, slightly uncomfortable with the fact that she’d been watched.

“I just wanted to update him,” she explained. “I’m off to the hospital with Dr James, so perhaps you could tell him thank you for me.”

Beth paused, looking at her for a moment before she replied.

“Sure. Of course.”

There was something else laced behind those words. Don’t tell me she’s got an eye for Duracell too, she thought, backing away from the young policewoman. No. It couldn’t be. Maybe Dean had stupidly told her about their kiss or told her the reason why she struggled to be in his company lately.

“Go, ma’am,” Beth urged. “We’ve got your statement, haven’t we?”

Olivia nodded.

“Great. We’ll take it from here then.”

She lifted her hand in a brief wave before turning and walking back to her colleagues.

Liv watched her moving across the sand toward the body. Something deep down bothered her about Beth’s attitude, about how saccharine sweet she sounded despite the coolness in her eyes, but she chose to ignore it.

Now was the time to stand her ground. Not after everything that had happened that night.

Quickly, she located Elliot’s belongings, scooped them up, and made her way up to the ambulance, throwing on his jacket before she got to it, secretly grateful that she wouldn’t have to wrap up in a blanket for the rest of the evening.

The ambulance journey to the hospital was fairly uneventful, except for when Elliot tore his mask off and insisted he was fine.

“Elliot,” she’d scolded him. “You’re a medical professional. Let them do their jobs.”

That had resulted in him begrudgingly agreeing to relax for the duration of the ride and then, once in the hospital, Olivia had wound up at his bedside in minor injuries unit, which meant she was privy to his various grumblings as the attending nurse got him set up for the night.
